Cheyenne's Data Center Boom: What It Means for Contractors, Crews, and Storage

By Highway 85 Storage6 min read

If you've driven South Greeley Highway lately, you've probably noticed more construction traffic. Cheyenne is now home to a growing cluster of large data center projects, and several of the biggest sit along or near U.S. 85 on the city's south side. That's the same highway our facility is named for.

Here's a plain-English rundown of what's being built, what it means for the people doing the building, and why storage is part of the picture. Project details change often, so everything below reflects public reporting as of late September 2026, with sources linked at the end.

What's being built around Cheyenne

Google's "Project Tembo" — south of Cheyenne on U.S. 85

The largest project began as "Project Jade," announced by Tallgrass and Crusoe in July 2025. Google has since been revealed as the owner. In September 2026 Google presented plans for a roughly $17 billion, 700-acre campus about eight miles south of Cheyenne, immediately next to U.S. 85. The plan includes four data center buildings. Google says grading could start as early as the end of 2026, with partial operations in the second half of 2028 and full buildout near the end of 2031.

Google estimates up to about 2,500 construction jobs at peak and around 250 long-term jobs once it's running. As of mid-September the project was still in local review and hadn't broken ground. Laramie County has also approved a large Tallgrass natural-gas power plant next to the campus.

Meta — High Plains Business Park

Meta announced its Cheyenne data center in July 2024: a 715,000-square-foot campus representing more than $800 million of investment, on Cheyenne's south side. Meta said more than 1,000 construction workers would be on site at the peak of construction, with about 100 permanent jobs.

Microsoft — expanding again

Microsoft has run data centers in Cheyenne since 2012. In July 2026, the Cheyenne City Council approved annexing about 3,460 acres of Microsoft-owned land. Microsoft plans to develop it into a data center campus gradually over the next 10 to 20 years.

Related Digital — Cheyenne Business Parkway

Related Digital broke ground in October 2025 on a $1.2 billion data center campus on Cheyenne Business Parkway. It expects more than 700 construction jobs.

What it means on the ground

Put those together and you have years of overlapping construction, not a single busy summer. The work needs electricians, pipefitters, welders, equipment operators, and many other trades, and a lot of them are coming from out of town. They bring trucks, trailers, tools, and often an RV to live in.

Housing is already feeling it. In August 2026, Laramie County approved zoning for an RV development west of Greeley Highway designed for 328 temporary-worker RVs, aimed at skilled tradespeople coming in for area projects. Local tourism officials have also described hotels filling up with project workers.

Why storage becomes part of the plan

Construction booms create storage needs that don't show up in the headlines. We see three groups most:

  • Contractors and subcontractors need somewhere secure for equipment trailers, job trailers, and spare work trucks between phases or between jobs. Many job sites can't hold them long-term. Our contractor storage guide covers sizing and the rules crews should know.
  • Traveling tradespeople often arrive with more than their living quarters: a boat, a toy hauler, a utility trailer, or a second vehicle. An RV park site holds the camper you live in, but not the rest. (One important note: storage lots, ours included, are for parking only. Nobody can live or stay overnight on site, so they complement worker housing rather than replace it.)
  • Cheyenne residents — including people who move here for the new permanent jobs — who have an RV or boat and nowhere to keep it, especially in neighborhoods with HOA restrictions.

Storage on the South Highway 85 corridor

Highway 85 Storage is at 2401 South Highway 85 in south Cheyenne, on the same corridor as much of this activity, with easy access to I-80 and I-25. We offer gated, fenced, camera-monitored 10×30 outdoor spots, and two adjacent spots can be combined for rigs up to 60 feet. The gate is open 24 hours a day, which matters when your shift starts before sunrise. Leases are month-to-month, so they follow a project schedule rather than a calendar year.

If you're planning around a project, you can check open spots and reserve specific ones on our live lot map. If you need six or more spots for a crew or fleet, use the Large Order option and we'll set it up with you directly.
