If you own an RV, boat, or trailer in Cheyenne, sooner or later you run into the same problem: it doesn't fit in the garage, the HOA won't let it sit in the driveway, and the side yard isn't going to work either. Paying for storage is the answer for most owners. But storage lots vary a lot, and the differences tend to show up only after you've signed.
Here are nine questions worth asking any facility, including ours, before you commit.
1. Will my rig actually fit?
Measure the full length, bumper to hitch or coupler, including anything mounted on the back such as a ladder, bike rack, or spare tire. Then compare that to the spot's real dimensions. Many leases require everything to stay inside the lines, and ours does. At Highway 85 Storage the standard spot is 10 feet wide by 30 feet long, and two adjacent spots can be combined for rigs up to 60 feet. That covers big fifth wheels, Class A motorhomes, and boats on long trailers.
2. How easy is it to get in and out?
Backing a 38-foot fifth wheel into a tight row is nobody's idea of fun. Look for wide drive aisles and enough room to swing a long rig without a spotter. Ask whether the surface is paved or gravel, and how it holds up in snow and spring mud.
3. When can I get to it?
Some facilities only open the gate during office hours, which is a problem if you want to leave for the lake at 5 a.m. on a Saturday. Our gate is open 24 hours a day, every day, with your personal access code, and staff are available 9am to 6pm daily.
4. What does security actually look like?
"Secure storage" can mean almost anything. Ask for specifics:
- Is the lot fully fenced, or just signed?
- Does each tenant get their own gate code, or does everyone share one?
- Are there cameras, and do they record around the clock?
- Is the lot lit at night?
Highway 85 Storage has perimeter fencing, a gate with a personal code for each tenant, 24/7 HD camera coverage, and lighting throughout the lot.
5. Outdoor, covered, or indoor?
Indoor and covered storage cost more and are often hard to find for large rigs. Outdoor storage is the most affordable and the most flexible on size, but your RV or boat is exposed to Cheyenne's sun, wind, snow, and hail. If you go outdoors, and we are an outdoor facility, plan on a good breathable cover and proper winter preparation.
6. What are the lease terms?
Watch out for long minimum terms and early-termination fees. Find out how much notice you need to give to leave, and how much notice the facility gives before raising rates. Our leases are month-to-month, with no long-term contract. We give 30 days' written notice before changing rates.
7. What do I need to move in?
Most reputable facilities will ask for the vehicle's registration, proof of ownership, proof of insurance, and a photo ID. It protects every tenant, because the facility knows exactly what is parked on the lot and who owns it. Have these ready and move-in goes quickly.
8. Who insures my RV or boat while it's stored?
You do. A storage lease rents you a space; the facility isn't taking custody of your property. Check that your RV or boat policy includes comprehensive coverage (theft, vandalism, wind, and hail) while the vehicle is in storage. In southeast Wyoming, hail coverage matters.
9. Can I see what's actually available?
Nothing is more frustrating than driving across town only to hear the lot is full. Ask whether you can see real availability before you go. On our reservation page the lot map shows exactly which spots are open right now, and you can pick the specific spot you want.
The short version
The right storage is the one where your rig fits without a fight, you can get to it when you want, security is more than a sign, and the lease doesn't lock you in. If you'd like to see whether Highway 85 Storage fits your needs, check live availability or call us at (970) 695-9309.
